S$# 018 Youngbloods | Get Together

Perhaps its because of all the soundtrack-laden boomer-oriented movies I've seen, but it seems there are some songs that evoke the 1960s at a visceral level. Songs like For What It's Worth by Buffalo Springfield, Whiter Shade Of Pale by Procol Harum and of course Born To Be Wild by Steppenwolf come to mind. Another one is this week's spotlighted song, Get Together by the Youngbloods.

Released on the group's selt-titled debut album in 1967, Get Together didn't hit it big until 1969, after it was featured in a public service ad. It's been used more recently in a soft drink commercial and in Forrest Gump.

Group leader Jesse Colin Young and his colleagues put a groovy Summer Of Love spin on the song, written by Dino Velante, and earlier recorded by Jefferson Airplane and others.

Get Together is a great reminder of a time when young people thought love would change the world.
Love is but a song we sing
fears' the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
or make the angels cry

Though the bird is on the wing
and you may not know why

Come on people now
smile on your brother
everybody get together
and try to love one another right now

The song has been featured on Youngbloods compilations and many movie soundtracks and 60s collections too.
