The September 2001 issue of Playboy featured many articles, including interviews with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Stanly Tucci, and an essay about Kurt Cobain. There were pictorial featues of Survivor contestant Jeri Manthey and Sascha Knopf.

Playmate Dalene Kurtis (who would become Playmate of the Year in 2002) also introduced another innovation to the centrefold.
