S$# 045 Dolly Parton | Here You Come Again

Here You Come Again, from the 1977 album of the same name, was Dolly Parton's first crossover hit, topping the US country singles chart and reaching #3 on the pop chart. (In Canada, the song peaked at no. 4 on the CHUM chart in early 1978.) And it was the first Dolly record to catch my attention.

Unlike most of her hits, Dolly didn't write HYCA; it was penned by songwriting duo Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. But Dolly delivers the mid-tempo number with the same amount of passion she brings to her own compositions. It tells about a woman who's discombobulated by her beau:

Here you come again
Just when I've begun to get myself together
You waltz right in the door
Just like you done before
And wrap my heart 'round your little finger
Here you come again
Just when I'm about to make it work without you
You look into my eyes
And light those dreamy eyes
And pretty soon I'm wonderin'
How I came to doubt you
All you gotta do
Is smile that smile
And there go all my defences
Just leave it up to you
And in a little while
You're messin' up my mind
An' fillin' up my senses
Here you come again
Lookin' better than a body
Has a right to
An' shakin' me up so
That all I really know
Is here you come again
An' here I go
All you gotta do
Is smile that smile
And there go all my defences
Just leave it up to you
And in a little while
You're messin' up my mind
An' fillin' up my senses
Here you come again
Lookin' better than a body
Has a right to
An' shakin' me up so
That all I really know
Is here you come again
An' here I go
Fade:
Here I go
An' here I go
An' here I go
Here you come again
An' here I go
Here I go
An' here I go

Dolly won a Grammy (best female country vocal) for HYCA. The album is out of print, but you can find the song on several Dolly collections, such as Ultimate Dolly Parton.
