Another vote on same-sex marriage
Parliament voted on Stephen Harper's motion on same-sex marriage a few days ago. The motion asked whether Parliament should restore the traditional definition of marriage.
In a free vote (it was free for the Conservatives, Liberals and NDP, but whipped for the Bloc Quebecois), the motion was defeated 175 to 123.
I'm glad it was defeated, and I hope that no future Parliament tries to revisit the issue.
Some have praised Harper for keeping his election promise to have such a vote. Perhaps he was pandering to religious right in the election campaign to get their votes when he made the promise. He must know that he could never make a retrograde law stick unless he used the notwithstanding clause, which he said he would not use.
So why did we just go through this pointless, yet divisive, exercise? Same-sex marriage is here to stay, and it's about time that the homophobes realize that and just accept it.
